Getting Started
1. What makes My Piano Academy unique?
Georgia Kaponi, has contributed to the development of the International School of Musicians piano syllabus and publications. This gives our students the advantage of learning with a teacher who understands exam standards from the inside out.
We are also home to the Duet Studio, a unique programme that develops ensemble and collaboration skills, open even to students who study with other teachers.
Finally, at My Piano Academy, lessons are adapted to every student’s goals, whether for leisure, exams, or advanced study. Families often learn together, and students can progress all the way from beginner level to UCAS-recognised qualifications.
2. Who can take lessons?
Children (from age 5), teenagers, and adults at all levels, from complete beginners to advanced pianists.
3. What teaching methods do you use?
We use a range of proven teaching methods that are adapted to the individual needs of each student. Our lessons cover technique, theory, musicality, and performance skills, with a strong emphasis on rhythmical topics. Rhythm and hand coordination are often some of the most common difficulties in piano learning, so we dedicate significant attention to helping students improve their rhythmic precision and coordination between both hands. We prepare students to take examinations with the ABRSM, Trinity College, International School of Musicians (ISOM), and the London College of Music Examinations syllabus, as well as all other Ofqual-recognised systems. In addition to preparing students for Graded Examinations, we also support students to explore a range of musical styles, including classical, contemporary, and more.
4. Do you offer online lessons?
Yes, My Piano Academy offers both in-person (in our Colchester studio near North Station) and online lessons. Online lessons are conducted mostly via Google Meet, providing great flexibility. Even if you are occasionally unavailable to attend a lesson due to being unwell or travelling, you can still have your lesson. Whether you are from our local community to anywhere across the globe, we can continue to provide high-quality music education to support your musical journey, ensuring you never miss a beat!
5. What are the lesson lengths and fees?
20, 30, 45, and 60-minute options. See our Piano Lessons page for details.
6. What is the curriculum at My Piano Academy?
At My Piano Academy, the curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive, in-depth understanding of the piano and music as a whole. Drawing on over thirty years of teaching experience and having been trusted to research, collect, adapt, and edit piano syllabi for International Schools of Musicians, we have developed a curriculum that goes beyond the confines of traditional exam boards.
While we incorporate formal syllabuses from ABRSM, Trinity College London, the International School of Musicians and the London College of Music for those pursuing exams, the core of the curriculum is built on a deeper knowledge and mastery of the instrument. It covers essential skills such as technique, theory, sight-reading, musicality, music understanding and expression at every stage of learning, providing students with a solid foundation for their musical journey.
The goal is to develop true musical understanding, whether students are preparing for exams, or performances, or simply enjoying playing the piano. The curriculum is flexible, with a focus on personal growth, and tailored to each student's individual goals and progress.
7. Are there any exam preparation options?

We offer comprehensive exam preparation, helping students achieve their best in exams with ABRSM, Trinity College London, the International Schools of Musicians and the London College of Music Examinations.
